Best kayak trip in Menorca: the transparent one!
Why I loved it
It was the 2nd time I’d kayaked at sea and the 1st time on a transparent kayak. The experience was well worth the detour. Firstly, because when the water was clear, I was able to admire the marine flora and fauna of the Cala Torret cove and the Binibeca beach. Then, because you’ll have the opportunity to enter a sea cave, the Cueva del Bufador, with your transparent kayak, an unforgettable moment with a caring and attentive instructor. The inside of the sea cave is only accessible by kayak.
I really appreciated the small group setting, with around ten people. The instructor took the time to give us directions, in English and Spanish, before we climbed into each of the transparent kayaks in pairs. The atmosphere was friendly, even if there were a lot of waves at times, because you’ll see that you’re really going out to sea, accompanied by one instructor in a kayak and 2 others in a boat. My tour took place in the early afternoon, but it is possible to do the activity at sunset. At the end of the activity, the instructor will offer you a savory snack to share with the group.
A few tips specific to this tour
Here are my tips to help you prepare for your activity in kayak transparent the best way possible:
- This activity is in great demand, so reserve your place well in advance of your stay to make the most of it,
- You’ll be in the water for at least 2 hours on board your kayak, so pack a swimsuit, hat, water shoes or sandals (flip-flops), sunglasses and sun cream,
- there’s no specific level of kayaking required for this activity, and anyone who can swim is welcome to join (including children) – a lifejacket is provided and compulsory,
- If you’re taking your phone with you to take photos, consider the waterproof plastic pouch,
- The instructor takes photos and provides the group with a GoPro camera for the duration of the tour,
- the activity is maintained according to weather conditions, so plan it at the beginning of your stay if the organizer changes the time or date,
- Keep fit, as you’ll be paddling 2 per kayak for almost 2 hours,
- Make sure you have a water bottle, even if a drink is offered during the activity, as it can get really hot when you spend 2 hours in the water under the sun,
- In high season, the Restaurant Paupa Bar is open on Cala Torret for a quick bite to eat.
How to get there
The transparent kayak activity departs from Cala Torret, near Binibeca beach in the village of Binibeca Vell in southeastern Menorca. How to get there:
- By car: from Port Mahon, allow 25min drive, and from Ciutadella, more like 1h depending on traffic. You’ll arrive via the main Me-1 road (expressway), then Me-8 or Me-10 depending on whether you’re arriving from the north or east (Port Mahon or MAH Airport) or the west (Ciutadella). Drive to Biniali then continue on the Carretera de Binibequer. Book a rental car, opt for a private transport in Menorca, or take a cab on your own.
- By bus: Bus 93 links the capital Port Mahon to the village of Binibeca with regular routes every day. Timetables and routes vary according to the time of year, check the official Menorca public transport website here.
Parking options in Binibeca near the start of the transparent kayak activity:
- The nearest to the beach is the Cala Binibequer parking lot near Carrer de S’Amfos Blau,
- Free parking is available further west of the beach on Carrer de Sancora,
- Finally, on Carrer des Timo you’ll find a parking lot with a few shaded spaces,
- If you’re lucky, you can also find free parking in the alleyways, but this can be difficult as they are quite narrow and the area is residential. Try to arrive early for easier parking.
Need to rent a car in Menorca?
My tips:
- Compare prices on my favorite platform: Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!
- Don’t choose a car too large, since some roads are very narrow
- Consider their full coverage option – it for peace of mind!
- Book early to have a large choice of vehicles!
Where to kayak in Menorca: best spots and map
Kayaking in Fornells
In the northeast of Menorca, Fornells Bay is home to the island’s famous marine reserve, protected since 1999 to preserve the coastline. Allow around 3 hours by kayak to complete the tour. The reserve is divided into 3 protected zones: the 1st, where it is forbidden to fish or extract marine flora and fauna. In the 2nd, only professional fishermen are allowed to fish. And finally, the 3rd zone offers more flexible but regulated fishing conditions. An ideal place for sea kayaking (and other nautical activities) that will appeal to lovers of marine life – see program and availability.
Kayaking in Es Grau
The area around the fishing village of Es Grau on Menorca’s north coast is also a great spot for kayaking. Kayaks are available for hire on site. From Es Grau, you can kayak to:
- Either Cala Sa Torreta on the S’Albufera d’Es Grau Natural Park side, where the beaches are breathtaking and fairly calm, overlooked by the Favaritx Lighthouse – allow less than 3 hours by kayak there and back (just over 8km),
- Or Sa Mesquida, a small fishing village whose beach has been the scene of historic moments of conquest. Little-known, the cove and beach (sometimes strewn with Posidonia meadows) with its turquoise water are not always crowded. You’ll also see the Torre de Sa Mesquida defensive tower. Some boat cruises make a stop here (see below). Allow around 4 hours for a round-trip kayak (15km).
See all nautical activities on Menorca’s north coast.
Kayaking at Cala’n Porter (20min from Port Mahon)
Cala’n Porter is one of Menorca’s most important seaside resorts. I particularly liked this place. Attached to the municipality of the village of Alaior, it’s a place that can be quite busy as you’ll find a multitude of water sports including kayaking, some quiet spots, access to several nature spots, an exceptional setting with clear turquoise water in the middle of cliffs that open up like 2 gigantic doors. The local people were also very welcoming, as is often the case in Menorca.
You can visit sea caves such as the Cueva de la Luz near the Mirador del Mediteraneo by kayak. To enjoy these sublime panoramas, discover the activity without delay!
Kayaking in Binibeca
On Menorca’s south coast, the village of Binibeca Vell boasts one of Menorca’s most beautiful beaches. It’s an ideal starting point for a kayak tour to admire both sunrise and sunset. The lights are even more beautiful on board a kayak in the open sea close to the rocks. You’ll have the chance to visit sea caves by kayak with snorkeling!
Generally, departures are from Cala Torret less than 10min walk from Binibeca beach – book your spot now.
Kayaking in Cala Galdana
Cala Galdana is one of Menorca’s largest seaside resorts. In the south-east of the island, it is attached to the municipality of Ferreries village. Situated very close to Cala Mitjana, another must-see beach and cove in Menorca, a 20-25min forest walk takes you there from the beach. This long sandy beach bordered by cliffs was a beautiful canvas to be admired in the morning or at sunset. You can rent kayaks here and reach the nearby beach of Cala Mitjana in 4 hours, via several sea caves.
Kayaking in Port Addaia
Just a 20-minute drive from Fornells, stop off at Port Addaia to see its wind-protected cove, where numerous water sports activities are organized. At the marina, facing the moored boats and the sails stowed inside the masts, take the time to sit down at one of its restaurants to enjoy fresh fish by the water. It’s an ideal place to enjoy the calm and serenity of Menorca’s northern coves while sampling the day’s catch. It’s also a great place to go kayaking and watch the sun set over Addaia Bay.

Tips for renting a kayak in Menorca
Menorca is a small paradise in the Balearic Islands for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts. It’s an ideal destination for sea kayaking, discovering the hidden corners of this Mediterranean island and its surprising sea caves. You’re probably asking yourself a number of questions before organizing your kayak trip in Menorca: where to rent, whether to take a guided tour, when to go, level of experience required… Find my advice in this section!
Choose a guided kayak tour or not?
Should you opt for a guided kayak tour or explore on your own? It depends on your personal preferences, your kayaking experience and what you’re looking for. Being adventurous and feeling free to plan your own sea kayaking itinerary, especially if you’ve done it before, are just some of the reasons to explore on your own.
Here are the reasons why I opted for a guided kayak tour of Menorca:
- Local guides are knowledgeable about the area (points of interest, wildlife, island culture and history, exclusive hidden corners), which can make your experience more educational and immersive.
- Instructors are trained to ensure the safety of participants, giving advice and instructions on how to paddle or react in an emergency, which is reassuring especially if you’re a beginner.
- all necessary equipment provided, including kayaks, life jackets, paddles, waterproof bags
- Focus on the experience itself rather than the logistics (planning, itinerary, organization) by being more relaxed and learning new kayaking techniques and navigation methods.
Recommended kayaking excursions in Menorca:

- Kayaking and snorkeling on the south coast – See program and availability
- Visit sea caves on the north coast from Fornells – Discover the activity
What are the ideal weather conditions?
Menorca’s climate is Mediterranean: mild in autumn/winter and warmer in spring/summer. Weather conditions can therefore vary, but it remains an ideal destination for kayaking. Some waters are clear and calm, or with a slight swell and wind. Others are rougher and require more vigilance and preparation.
Best time to kayak in Menorca
The best time to kayak in Menorca depends on your preferences, weather conditions and the island’s seasonality. Make sure you always follow the safety recommendations and local navigation rules. Here are a few points to bear in mind:
- In spring (April to June): it’s a pleasant time to kayak on the island, weather conditions are stable and temperatures rise but it’s still not too hot,
- in summer (July to September): this is the high tourist season with long, warm days conducive to water activities, but be aware that there will be more people on site,
- In autumn (October to November): temperatures are still pleasant, the climate is mild, and the crowds start to thin out, offering you a quieter experience,
- In winter (December to March): it’s a quieter time for tourism, with cool temperatures and windy conditions, so be sure to bring appropriate wetsuit-type clothing, as the water is around 15°C. Always check weather conditions before heading out to sea.
Skill and experience levels for kayaking in Menorca
Once again, it all depends on what you prefer and what your expectations are! In general, Menorca offers options to suit different skill levels, from beginners to more experienced kayakers.
- Beginner’s level: I recommend being accompanied by an instructor or choosing calm itineraries with gentle waters in protected areas such as the Menorca Marine Reserve on the north coast, or bays such as Addaia or Fornells – see guided tour options
- Intermediate level: you can consider longer outings but always check the weather conditions, in guided activity or on your own.
- Advanced level: some itineraries are more demanding and longer with a stronger swell.
Whatever your level:
- Always check weather and sea conditions before setting off, as they can vary in Menorca,
- Familiarize yourself with the area where you plan to kayak before you set off (strong currents or underwater rocks),
- Bring adequate safety equipment, including life jackets, appropriate paddles and any other equipment recommended for your level of experience,
- If you have no kayaking experience, start with a guided tour or kayaking lessons with professionals. You’ll learn the basics of paddling technique and kayak safety.
