Markets in Menorca – Map and quick answers
Map of markets in Menorca
Here’s a map to help you find your way around the various locations I’ve mentioned in this article.
Markets in Menorca – Tips and essentials
Markets in Menorca, also known as “mercat” in Catalan or “mercado / mercadillo” in Spanish, are in my opinion must-sees to fully experience the local charm of this Balearic gem. In fact, they’re among the best ideas for things to do in Menorca. Some are open all year round, others add to the summer atmosphere to sweeten the summer evenings! To make the most of this experience, I’ve included some essential tips in this section:
- First of all, even if some shops accept bank cards, bring cash (small denominations and change) so you don’t have to run out to find an ATM while you’re shopping.
- Try to arrive early to avoid the crowds, as the markets are highly coveted on Menorca (by tourists and locals alike!) and are among the island’s most renowned attractions.
- Take the time to taste the local specialities on offer at the stalls, and discover new flavours that will delight your taste buds.
- Find out where to park for shopping in Menorca the day before you come. Think about how easy it is to park as this is not always the case on the island, in villages as in big cities. If there’s no parking around the market, check if it’s possible to park in the alleyways (and not just for locals). In busy areas, parking can become a real ordeal, with people coming to spend the day or evening.
My favorite markets in Menorca
I wandered around Menorca’s day and night markets, in the small coastal urbanizations, in the heart of the island’s 2 main towns, and also in the picturesque inland villages. All these markets have their own unique charm, which is what makes Menorca so special. Here I met friendly craftsmen and shopkeepers eager to share their island’s local culture.
My 3 favorite markets in Menorca are :
- The Mercat des Peix or Port Mahon fish market: an institution in the capital, you’ll feel the soul of the city here near the port. Seafood and shellfish, tapas, fresh fish, sandwiches, local beers and wines, I had a blast!
- The Ciutadella day and night market: on the Plaça Es Born and then along the descent to the marina, with all those beautiful handicrafts, fabrics, canvas or leather bags, colorful and creative jewelry.
- The Es Castell village night market: on Carrer Sant Joseph and then up the stairs to the marina, you’ll discover dozens of stalls selling leather goods, textiles, leather, decorative items, souvenirs, cheese and local charcuterie children’s toys… In a musical atmosphere, especially on summer evenings!
Where to stay in Menorca?
I recommend staying either close to one of the 2 main towns, Ciutadella or Port Mahon, or in one of the charming little villages all over the island. You’ll enjoy good restaurants, typical markets and their picturesque atmosphere. For example, you could opt for:
- Hotel Gran Melia Villa Le Blanc Hotel in Santo Tomas – View photos & availability
- Hotel Catalonia Mirador des Port, overlooking the natural harbour of Mahon – View photos & availabilities
- Hotel Smoix Hotel, in the old town of Ciutadella – View photos and availability
1. Port Mahon markets
Port Mahon is Menorca’s capital, and as you stroll through its narrow streets and lively neighborhoods, you’ll meet craftsmen who will reveal the secrets of Menorca’s traditions and local produce.
There is a wide variety of markets:
- flea, antique and second-hand markets (or “mercadillo”)
- FISH MARKET
- day and night markets (crafts and local produce)
The best-known markets in Port Mahon and their opening times are :
- The Mercat des Peix is one of my good places to eat in Menorca: open in summer Monday to Saturday 11am to 11:30pm and in winter Friday and Saturday 11am to 4pm and 7pm to 11pm. Open on Sundays in July and August.
- The Mercat des Claustre del Carme features Menorcan terroir, homemade products and handmade objects, located in the courtyard of a historic 17th-century neoclassical religious building: open Monday to Saturday 9am to 9pm and Sunday 8am to 2pm. Dedicated parking lot open 24 hours a day. More information here.
- The craft market located on Plaza del Carmen: open from July to September, Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 2pm.
- The night markets on the port, Plaça de Espana and Plaça de S’Esplanada: open from late June to September from 8pm to 11pm (Tuesdays on the port, Thursdays on the other 2 squares).
2. Markets in Ciutadella
Ciutadella, the island’s second-largest city and former capital of Menorca, is also the seat of the Menorcan Diocese. Did you know that its port is actually home to 4 of them? Fishing, yachting, commercial and passenger harbours are all accessible via a promenade, and a number of craftsmen also have their stalls on display! Ciutadella has a number of markets for you to sample typical recipes, tapas or pick up beautiful local handicrafts:
- fish market
- municipal market
- local crafts market
The best-known markets in Ciutadella and their opening times are :
- The Mercat Municipal is Ciutadella’s fish and seafood market, where you’ll also find sun-drenched vegetables and fruit on the stalls of local farmers: open Tuesday to Saturday, 7:30am to 1:30pm and 5pm to 8pm, Saturday 7:30am to 2pm. Closed Sundays and Mondays.
- The craft market located on the Plaza des Born: open Mondays and Fridays from 7pm to midnight from June to September, Wednesdays also at the same times in July and August.

3. Alaior markets
The adorable little village of Alaior was founded in the early 14th century, just after the conquest of Menorca by Alfonso III of Aragon, King of Aragon, King of Valencia and Count of Barcelona. Did you know that since 1998, it has also been home to the University of the Balearic Islands in Menorca?
This picturesque village just 15min by car and 20min by bus from Port Mahon boasts a charming nightly craft market on Wednesdays from June to September. Come and meet the artisans of the commune and the whole island from 7pm to 11pm during the summer in the village’s historic center.
Enjoy the magic of the Alaior Christmas market throughout December.
4. Es Castell markets
Es Castell is a charming little commune, of British origin founded in the 18th century, which I really loved with its colorful buildings, squares and alleyways.
Famous for its mills at the entrance, this is the place where the imprint of the British occupation is most marked particularly in the architecture. In the gentle atmosphere of a port town on the move, its night craft market enlivens this coastal village off the beaten track. Market open from June to September, 8 pm to midnight.
This is a pleasant place to stroll, with restaurants and stores near the marina, which faces Cala Llonga on the other shore and Illa del Rei to the west.
I don’t drink coffee
But I also like other drinks and sweets!

5. Es Mercadal markets
Es Mercadal is a pretty, picturesque village of white houses founded in the 14th century. It’s less than a 10-minute drive from Monte Toro and its famous sanctuary, from which the views of the island were simply incredible!
In this white village in the heart of Menorca, markets flourish all year round:
- The winter market on Carrer Nou: every Thursday from January to March from 10am to 1pm.

- The Spring Market on Carrer Nou: every Thursday from 10am to 1pm from April to June.
- The nightly craft market in the historic village center: every Thursday from 7pm to 10:30pm from June to October.
6. Fornells markets
The small seaside resort of Fornells on the island’s north coast boasts a delightful marina near which numerous stalls selling local crafts are set up, particularly on summer evenings.
In this pretty fishing village surrounded by typical houses and traditional restaurants, stroll through the summer night market every Monday from 7-10:30pm from June to October. You’ll find craftsmen and shopkeepers on Calle Mayor and Plaza de la Iglesia.
My favourite activity in Menorca
I highly recommend the Binibeca: guided transparent kayak tour.
In just 2 hours, you’ll experience an unforgettable moment: a glimpse of the turquoise waters without diving, in the magical coves, caves and beach of Binibeca.
7. Ferreries markets
Ferreries is a small, picturesque village on Menorca, built in the 14th century and holding an important historical and industrial position on the island. What I liked best about this Menorcan village was the lively, musical atmosphere of its narrow streets, its typical, well-preserved buildings and its friendly, authentic atmosphere.
How could we not mention its artisan and food market open all year round on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm on the Place d’Espagne? In July and August, local artisans and producers offer a demonstration of local art and produce on Fridays from 7pm to 11pm.
8. Cala’n Porter markets
Cala’n Porter is one of Menorca’s most important seaside resorts. It’s attached to the municipality of the village of Alaior.
It can be quite a busy place, as you’ll find a multitude of water sports activities, some quiet spots, access to several corners of nature, an exceptional setting with clear, turquoise water amid the cliffs. This charming urbanization boasts a night market from June to September every Monday and Thursday from 7pm to 11pm. Go to Plaza Mevis and Plaza Gran.
