Weekend in Mallorca: essentials and tips
Is it worth visiting Mallorca with 2 or 3 days?
Mallorca is quite a large island, so don’t except to see it entirely. But it is worth it, if you want to get a glimpse and enjoy a few relaxing days discovering a new place.
Depending on what you enjoy, you can spend a weekend:
- exploring a city,
- spending all your time at the beach,
- staying near a beach but exploring a little around…
All the itineraries below offer you weekend ideas for all those types of short stay.
With only 2 days, I think the best option is the first one, only in Palma de Mallorca.
Best things to do in Mallorca for a weekend trip?
Again it depends on what you want to see:
- a classic is the main town Palma de Mallorca with its impressive cathedral
- or you can see splendid beaches such as Cala des Moro
- or head to the mountains and discover stunning scenery such as Sa Calobra
- …

1. City-focused – 2 or 3 days in Palma de Mallorca
Where to stay for this itinerary
Well, obvious for this one… in Palma de Mallorca.
Either on the Marina waterfront or the old town.

For this itinerary, depending on your walking capacity, I recommend using the hop-on hop-off bus.
It covers almost all the points of interest in and around the city.

Day 1 – Palma Highlights (avoid Sundays and Mondays)
Stop 1 – Visit the Cathedral and cloister
The interiors of the Cathedral are as beautiful as its exteriors.
It is called the Cathedral of lights for its stained-glass windows. The rose window in particular fills up the interiors with colored hues of the morning light.
You can even add a visit to the terrace to your Cathedral tour. The terrace offers excellent panoramic views. Children under 8 are not allowed on the terrace.
- Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 10:00 hrs to 17:15 hrs, Saturdays from 10:00 hrs to 14:15 hrs

Stop 2 – Visit the Royal Palace
Next to the Cathedral is yet another emblematic monument of Palma: The Royal Palace of Almudaina.
The Palace which enjoys the status of an Alcazar was built during the Moorish times and later reconstructed by James II in the 14th century.
Today, it is also used as one of the official residences of the royal family.
The chapel inside the Palace is lovely. You can also visit the terrace for views of the coastline of Palma de Mallorca.
- Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am to 7 pm (April to September), 10 am to 6 pm (October to March)
- Monday closed
- Price: 7 Euros
- Free entry: Wednesday and Sunday (3 pm to 7 pm for up to 60 minutes before closing time)

Stop 3 – Walk around Walls and Gates (Ses Voltes)
Across the waterfront, you will see the walls of the ancient town and its many gates.
Make sure you check these out for lovely views.
Admire the beauty of the fortified walls and its many gates.
Access to this is free.
Stop 4 – A quick visit to the Arab Baths
The Arab baths are the only remains of the Arab city of Medina Mayurqa.
The baths were built from the remains of the earlier constructions in their place which date back to the Roman, Muslim, and Byzantine periods.
The Arab style of columns, arches, and doorways are unique compared to other monuments in Palma.
There is also a small garden near the bath that’s lovely for relaxing.
You can also watch a small video to acquaint yourself with the history of the Arab Baths.

Stop 5 – Stroll Rest of city center (less historical part)
Explore the streets, go for a walk without a goal in mind. Along the way you will discover:
- Plaça Major, a typical busy Spanish square in the heart of Palma
- a high number of Art Deco or Art Nouveau buildings such as Can Roca, Can Forteza, Can Coll, Gran Hotel.
- the charming patios around which the houses are built.
- truly unique trees, such as the old olive tree classified as a unique tree
Stop 6 – Finish the day Relax around the Parc de la Mar lagoon
One of the most enjoyable places in Palma is the Parc de la Mar lagoon.
It is located in front of the Cathedral, with perfect views of it over the water.
There is an artificial lake with a beautiful fountain here.
You will also find interesting modern sculptures in the park.
It is a great place to relax, walk around and take in the views of the Mediterranean sea.
Day 2 – Castle and beach
Stop 1 – Castell de Bellver
The Castell de Bellver is a spectacular hilltop castle. It is situated outside the city center of Palma to the west.
It is popular amongst tourists for its rare circular shape.
It was built in the 14th century for King James II of Majorca. In the later years, it was used as a prison.Since the late 20th century, it houses a museum.
It is a must-visit for its 360-degree views and spectacular architectural details.

Stop 2 – Palma Beach
Spend the afternoon at the S’Arenal beach, South of Palma de Mallorca.
You can:
- walk along the very long beach, bare foot in the sand.
- Lay down and soak up the sun
- go for a swim!
Stop 3 – Sunset Cruise
If you want to get the best sunset pictures, admire the Tramuntana Mountain range and do all this while listening to music and partying all the way, hop on to a sunset cruise.

Day 3 – Museums of Palma
Choose a couple of Museum to explore in town. It is rich in art and history.
Here are some of the best options, in my opinion:
Palma Aquarium, if you have kids
The Palma Aquarium is a beautiful aquarium to learn more about Mediterranean marine species.
You can see sharks, participate in diving activities, enjoy 4D theatre or even attend a feeding session here.

Fundacio Bartolome March
This is a beautifully curated art museum. It houses five collections of art including modern and contemporary sculptures, bibliography, manuscripts and a collection of navigation charts.
It is located in the old center.

Musea Diocese (Sacred Art Museum)
This museum is located inside a 13th-century bishop’s palace.
It is a religious museum showcasing sacred Christian arts from the early 13th century onwards.
It is located in the old center of Palma.

- Price: 4 euros or 8 euros.

Fundacio Miro Mallorca
This is a cultural center that celebrates the work of Juan Miró. It is located inside an art studio.
It is located at Carrer de Saridakis, about a 20-minute drive to the southwest from the old center.
- Opening Hours: Tuesday to Saturday: 10 am to 7 pm (Summer) and 10 am to 6 pm (Winter), Sunday 10 am to 3 pm, Monday closed.

- Museu de Mallorca – The Museum of Mallorca is situated inside a 16th-century mansion. It has one main building and two small allied buildings.It displays archeological and fine arts exhibitsIt is located in the old center of Palma – Website here
One place to eat
Palma provides its tourists with some of the best Spanish food options.
A great tapas restaurant is Ombu. It was so intriguing and fun to taste. Don’t forget to book!

2. Beach & Sun – 72h in Mallorca on a beach
This options is for those who are looking for a very relaxing break with no excursions.
Simply walking along the beach, relaxing, taking in some sun, and eating good food.
You need a place to stay with quite a long beach for ample of places, lots of eating out options and possibility to go for a walk. I have 4 options for you.
And to get to your hotel from the airport:
Option 1 – Port d’Alcudia / Playa del Muro
Alcudia Bay is a large area with a long sandy beach all along: 3km long!
It is cut into 3 main “towns”:
- Port d’Alcudia (West side) – more town than resort, with the beautiful end of the lagoon and the port
- Platja de Muro (middle) – many accommodations feet on the beach
- Can Picafort (East) – wide choice of accommodations and restaurants
You can walk along the beach for a long time with beautiful views and a lagoon at one end.
And it is a great place to relax and enjoy water activities.

Option 2 – Colonia de Sant Jordi
Colonia is a coastal resort town with a great atmosphere.
It offers a lot with promenades, series of beaches, great restaurant, easy access to beautiful coves…
The area has been settled since the Bronze age. Salt and fishing made it a prosperous village.
Despite a few modern buildings, a lot of the town has been able to keep its charm with stone houses.
It is also the gateway to Cabrera island.
Some nightlife, but rather quiet.

Option 3 – Port de Soller
As it has remained isolated for a long time, Port de Soller does not have huge buildings on the waterfront.
The town still has a lot of charm.
Plus, it has a large protected bay where the waters are calm and is surrounded by mountains.
The only drawbacks, it that is so picturesque (especially with the old tram) that it is full of day trip visitors.
And the beaches are smaller than the one listed before and after.

Option 4 – S’Arenal
El Arenal is the ideal place for those looking for long sandy beach mixed with active nightlife.
Its 6km long beach ends with a large choice of accommodations and a large amount of bars and clubs.
Also written S’Arenal or simply Arenal.

3. Variety without car – 3 days in Mallorca based in Palma

For this one, I recommend on the beach side of Palma, so as to enjoy the beach after your excursions around the island. It will complete your experience well.

Day 1 – Palma Highlights (avoid Sundays and Mondays)
Pick your favorite stops from the 1st itinerary that is all about Palma de Mallorca.
It depends on your interests.
Personally, I recommend:
- Morning around the cathedral with a visit to the cathedral – to save time, get the skip-the-line ticket
- Afternoon at Castell de Bellver – I really enjoyed it. Its unique shape and incredible views of the mountains and town
- Sunset cruise – check out program and availability
Day 2 – Port de Soller and mountains
Port de Soller is about 45 minutes away from Palma and Se Calobra is 30 minutes further up on the same route.
You can visit both these places by bus, tram or even a boat.
Port de Soller is a coastal village with a picturesque seafront. It is also home to a historical tram.
From here you can take a scenic boat ride to the area of Sa Calobra in the Tramuntana mountains and visit a sanctuary.

Day 3 – Alcudia and Formentor
Alcudia and Formentor offer a scenic getaway from Palma.
Alcudia is a beautiful medieval town and Formentor has a gorgeous beach and cliffs.
Even though the day trip is fairly laid back, the beautiful route, the charming old towns, and the beach time offer excellent touristic value.

Day 1 – Formentor
Head down to the Formentor Peninsula.
Some of the most fascinating stops are:
- Enjoy the view at Es Colomer
- Go off the beaten path to enjoy the 380° panorama at the Albercutx tower
- Drive the main road through the peninsula to the lighthouse (or take the bus in Summer)
- Stroll on the fine sand of Playa de Formentor

If you prefer less driving and a more relaxing day: Take a boat tour to see the cliffs from the water – see options & book
Day 2 – Tramuntana, Sa Calobra, Pollença
Stop 1 – Sa Calobra
Enjoy a stunning drive up the Tramuntana mountains.
And down to Sa Calobra. I recommend visiting early morning to park easily and avoid the crowds. This is one of the most fascinating places to visit on the island.

Stop 2 – Lluc Monastery
Monastery and pilgrimage site in the Tramuntana mountains.
Pilgrims have visited since the 13th century when a sheperd boy discovered a wooden statue of the Virgin (‘La Moreneta’). It is now encrusted with precious stones.
Nowadays the monastery has been transformed into a hotel. But the place is famous for its spiritual energy.

Stop 3 – Pollença
Pollença has been settled since Prehistoric times. The town is full of history and splendid views. It is now attracting many artists.
From the main large square you can explore narrow alleys. But the main attraction is the staircase to the Calvari.
- Climb the staircase to El Calvari – take your time & enjoy the views towards the city and towards the sea
- Enjoy one of the terraces at the main square
- Visit the church Santa Maria dels Angels
- Get lost in the narrow streets. Visit the museum de Pollença
- Walk around Torre Desbrull
- Walk outside the city center to reach the Roman Bridge (Pont Roma) – 39°52’56.9″N 3°00’54.2″E
Day 3 – Alcudia relaxing day
Stop 1 – Alcudia old town
Founded around 70 BC by the Romans, the old town of Alcudia has a lot of character. It is a medieval gem.
The maze of narrow alleys is surrounded by walls and impressive gates on which you can walk.
It is home to many architectural wonders from various eras including old Roman ruins.
- Walk the medieval walls
- Admire the various gates (best are Porta del Moll and Porta de Vila Roja)
- Wander in the narrow streets full of charm
- Visit the church with its typical Mallorcan style
- The Renaissance building of the town hall
- Discover the area of Palaca de Toros
- Visit the Roman ruins of Pollentia – 4€ – 9:30am to 3pm – closed Sun
Stop 2 – Afternoon at the beach
And then head to Port d’Alcudia and its wonderful beach.
Relax, walk, soak up the sun, swim and enjoy the water activities.
5. Calas bonanza – 3 days in Cala d’Or
Where to stay for this itinerary
Cala d’Or, the “Golden Bay”, is a very popular area on the South-East Coast.
It is the gateway to many of the most beautiful coves (calas) in Mallorca.
The town is characterized by the many small coves (rather than a long beach and bay). Therefore, there are many scenic places to enjoy.
It is a resort town with all you could need for a holiday – beaches, shopping, nature reserves, nightlife…
The most famous calas in Cala d’Or is Cala Esmeralda.

Day 1 – Mondrago Natural Park
The Mondrago Natural Park is famous for its white sand beaches, turquoise water and protected nature.
Several hiking paths allow the visitors to find long and small beaches, whilst admiring the cliff views.
It is popular but remains a breath of fresh air surrounded only by nature.
15min drive from Cala d’Or
- Main beach with restaurants: Cala Mondrago
- The longest beach: Cala S’Amarador
- The beautiful hike #2 along the cliffs and to the tiny beach of Calo des Borgit: Gorgeous views, pine trees and a bunker
- The narrow rocky cala d’en Perdu
- The birds
Day 2 – Calo des Moro & Cala Figuera
Stop 1 – Calo des Moro
30min drive from Cala d’or
Calo des Moro is a stunning gem worth the effort to reach it.
It is often listed as one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca. The beach is actually very small, but the cove is mesmerizing.
The best part is that you can see from many angles as you walk the hiking path around it and walk down to water level.
I love:
- The color of the water
- The little headland on the sea side
- The perfect size of the cove, not too wide, not too narrow,
- The snorkeling opportunity along the cliffs
- …
Just look at the pictures above and below. I don’t think any more words are necessary…
But come early if you truly want to enjoy it!

Stop 2 – Cala Figuera – fishing village
25 min drive from Cala d’Or
Cala Figuera is a completely different experience.
It has still narrow water path entering the land, but here it is a small fishermen village that has kept its charm.
It can be enjoyed at water level, discovering the traditional houses with green accent and the boat houses.
And it can be enjoyed from the top of the cliffs with mesmerizing views of turquoise waters and nature’s carving work.
Note: not to be mixed up with Cala Figuera in Formentor, another beautiful cove accessible via a steep hike.
Easier to park at the top (GPS in eBook) and walk down to the fishing port (steep narrow road)
Day 3 – Relax in Cala d’Or
Take your time to enjoy Cala d’or.
It is home to several small coves.
The most famous is Cala Esmeralda with beautiful rocks and trees. Facing South East. Extremely popular. Parking is difficult. Hotels all around.
Others are Cala Gran, Cala Serena, Cala Petita and Cala Ferrera.
And you can go explore the 18th century fortress Es Forti, opposite the town, on the headland. It offers great views of the bay with all the calas.
6. Family: 3 days in Mallorca with kids
If you are traveling with kids, you may want to find attractions adapted to them.
Option 1 – Port d’Alcudia
In Port d’Alcudia, you can find:
- Beach with lagoon area
- Dolphin watching tours – See options
- Glass bottom tour
- Karting – Separate track for adults and teens vs 4 to 7 years old children. See official website.

- Alcudia Waterpark: Hidropark
