Why visit Menorca’s Lithica botanical garden?
What is the Lithica garden (quarries of s’Hostal)?
The Lithica Pedreres de S’Hostal quarries are a unique site in Menorca. I was struck by how few signposts there were on the road leading to this huge, playful mineral labyrinth surrounded by a 7-hectare botanical garden! This is one of the quarries for ” marès “, a limestone long used to build traditional houses on the island.
This botanical garden is actually one of my best ideas for things to do on the island.
Is the Lithica botanical garden worth a visit?
Yes, the Lithica botanical garden is well worth a visit. It also incorporates the quarries of a limestone called “marès” that is widespread in Menorca. It’s a pretty spectacular place where every section of the park is a new discovery. Did you know that Menorca is still a very well preserved island classified Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO? The quarries of s’Hostal estate is one of the estates participating in this conservation of flora and fauna on the island.
Many plant and animal species will be presented to you along the biodiversity circuit. My favorite moment after discovering the labyrinth: the verdant and silent medieval garden, nestled between the limestone walls at the heart of the estate, reminiscent of the serenity of a cloister.
However, to fully enjoy the experience, there are a few things you need to know. See all my planning tips later in the article.

Lithica Garden and s’Hostal quarries: off the beaten track
The Lithica Pedreres de S’Hostal quarries are a veritable hidden gem in the west of Menorca. The place seems almost reclusive, even though it covers several hectares! It’s an ideal place for those with a passion for botany and geology, rarely recommended and promoted on Menorca’s tourist itineraries.
I didn’t know what to expect on my way to this place, which I actually had a bit of trouble finding. You’ll find that there aren’t many signs on the road to get there, and that even the sharpest GPS sometimes struggles to find its way!
The site includes an educational dimension on limestone quarries: the stages of extraction, the quarryman’s trade through the ages, machines and tools such as extraction winches or chain cutters, which are in fact stone cutters. In short, a highly instructive visit!
Once there, I was overwhelmed by this magnificent limestone labyrinth as I entered the site, then by the many gardens and botanical circuit at the heart of the park. The park is home to many different plant species, as well as numerous birds and reptiles, some of which have built their nests here.
I felt in harmony with nature and this surprising place, each area of the site revealing a different atmosphere and environment. You’ll want to spend hours here!
Immersion in the labyrinths
The main advantage of the site is that you can wander freely, but you can also retrace your steps using the map provided at reception if you’re interested in a shorter walk. Entering this labyrinth of “marès” is quite a unique experience. In fact, you can’t miss this exceptional and intriguing view as soon as you arrive at Lithica, which for me is actually one of Minorca’s most beautiful landscapes.
Created to mark Lithica’s 20th anniversary, the Mineral Labyrinth was designed by several artists: Laetitia Lara with the collaboration of Nuria Roman and Basile Ribas. These tons of limestone embody the labyrinthine essence of the quarries. Inspired by the Minotaur’s Labyrinth, you’ll enjoy a playful experience in which each visitor is both lost and searching, reflecting life’s journey. This collective work of dry-laid stone blends harmoniously into the landscape. It turns the tradition of the quarryman’s trade on its head, this time giving back to the quarry the stones it supplied, and giving it a new lease of life.
When out and about, be sure to look out for the various viewpoint markers and safety signs. Low stone walls are not always very high, so be careful, don’t lean out and don’t leave your children unattended. Stay on the marked paths and guard-rails. Of course, it is forbidden to climb on any guard walls or labyrinth walls.
The Orchard or Plant Labyrinth is part of the botanical circuit and adjoins the Medieval Garden. This circular path is dotted with aromatic plants such as chamomile and basil.
A walk in the gardens
The Medieval Garden, between poetry and effervescence
Whether you decide to follow the botanical trail or not, the Medieval Garden is bound to be on your way as you stroll along. My favorite moment after discovering the mineral labyrinth: the verdant, silent Medieval Garden, nestled between the limestone walls at the heart of the estate.
The access path is slightly steep, with no stairs. You’ll feel like you’re stepping into an illuminated cavern. I loved the serenity that emanated from this space, the effervescence of the plants giving an impression of disorder whereas the space for each species is delimited and ordered.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover “parterres” of red cabbage, as elegant as large flowers. They added color to a place as peaceful as an abbey cloister. The aligned poles let the rays of light shine in on certain areas of the garden. A very poetic atmosphere, with a pretty stone fountain in the center and high, warped walls carved by nature into the limestone.
Botanical trail now a biodiversity trail
If you decide to follow the botanical trail, be prepared to discover many protected species typical of the Mediterranean region. Orange, olive, almond, African tamarix and pomegranate trees flourish and bud in the Lithica Botanical Garden and s’Hostal quarries.
Don’t forget to ask for a brochure and tour map at reception on arrival (available in several languages). In 13 stages, you’ll get a complete overview of the plant species preserved on this estate. The botanical circuit has in fact become a biodiversity circuit, with botanical, zoological, ethnological and geological information panels. Thanks to all this information, I was able to take a complete picture of Menorca’s flora and fauna!
If you’re lucky, you too may catch a glimpse of the ruin lizard, the Mediterranean tortoise, the green toad or hear the song of the Balearic Warbler (a small, discreet bird).
Did you know that the Lithica garden and s’Hostal quarries are home to an animal shelter? Run by the GOB (Balearic Association for Ornithology and Nature Conservation), you’ll have the opportunity to visit it according to times and periods of the year.
My favourite activity in Menorca
I highly recommend the Binibeca: guided transparent kayak tour.
In just 2 hours, you’ll experience an unforgettable moment: a glimpse of the turquoise waters without diving, in the magical coves, caves and beach of Binibeca.
Other places and beaches not to be missed near Lithica Garden
Ciutadella
The Mediterranean atmosphere in Ciutadella is both vibrant and soothing, with the soul of its old town, the modernity of its port and the variety of possible activities and places of interest in this city. It is Menorca’s 2nd largest city after Port Mahon, with a similar population density. It’s also the island’s former capital and still the seat of the Minorcan bishopric.
Under Muslim rule in Andalusia from the 9th century to the Middle Ages, Ciutadella was considered the cultural, administrative and political center of Menorca. Its location made it a strategic site for the island’s capital until the 18th century. Its port is also renowned for its modern infrastructure. Finally, Ciutadella is close to many of Menorca’s places of interest.

Cala Blanca Beach
To the west of Menorca near Ciutadella, Cala Blanca is a relaxing beach overlooking the coast of Mallorca when the sky is clear. I felt soothed watching these rocks forming a huge corridor that opens out into the Mediterranean Sea. A good option if you’re with the family, the beach is easy to access, with children’s playgrounds, stores and several restaurants overlooking the water in bewitching shades of blue.
There can be a lot of algae in this area, but the beach is regularly cleaned. If you like surprises and treasure hunts, opt for a tour by kayak with treasure hunt which will take you to Cala Blanca. So, are you ready for adventure?
Beaches of Cala’n Bosch and Son Xoriguer
Cala’n Bosc is part of the municipality of Ciutadella, in the west of Menorca.
Despite its touristy side, the beauty of this place made a lasting impression on me: its fine white sand, turquoise waters, the view of the horizon, the many palm trees that line it. I felt quite comfortable here, as the beach is quite wide with an unobstructed view.
On site, you’ll enjoy a wide choice of accommodation, easy access to the beach, volleyball courts and easy access to the main road for exploring the island. It’s a famous spot in Menorca, and can be very busy in high season (July and August in particular). Son Xoriguer beach, near Cami de Cavalls, is just a few minutes’ walk away.
Cala en Blanes beach
Cala en Blanes is a residential area with a sandy beach and a pretty cove. It is also attached to the municipality of Ciutadella and is one of Menorca’s smaller beaches. On site, you can choose from a wide range of accommodation of all types with easy access to the beach, activities suitable for all ages and proximity to famous landmarks such as the Puente de Gil natural bridge or the Punta Nati lighthouse. A cruise with paella tasting tempted? It’s another way to discover this family-friendly beach near Ciutadella!
