Exploring the Algarve, I was captivated by its golden and ochre rock formations, its crystal-clear blue-green waters and its cliffs sculpted by the Atlantic into breathtaking landscapes. That is why the beaches of this Portuguese coast attract travellers from all over the world. Whether you are looking for a long sandy beach, a hidden cove tucked among the rocks or an impressive natural arch, the Algarve has a beach for you.
Choosing was genuinely difficult — I admit I have a soft spot for rock formations, and that will show in my picks! Here is my list of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, with my own photos, tips and a map to help you plan.

Most Beautiful Beaches in the Algarve: Map and Selection
In this article, I will take you on a journey to discover the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, where ochre, red and golden cliffs plunge into a deep blue sea, and where rock formations create natural scenery unlike anywhere else in the world.
The Algarve stretches along the southern coast of Portugal, from Vila Real de Santo António in the east to Cape St. Vincent in the west, the southwesternmost point of continental Europe.
The beaches are the main attraction of the Algarve (see other highlights).
Map
Here is a map to help you locate my selection:

A reminder that in summer, the most accessible beaches can get very crowded, especially in July and August. Heading out early in the morning or in the late afternoon makes all the difference.
Where to Go in the Algarve for the Best Beaches
Having explored the entire coast, I think the best area for the most spectacular rock formations is the western coast, between Lagos and Portimão. For the wildest scenery, head to the Costa Vicentina in the northwest.
Tides
Don’t forget — the Algarve faces the ocean, not the Mediterranean. There are therefore tides.
At certain times, some beaches disappear completely when the water rises all the way to the foot of the cliff!
1. Praia da Falésia (Albufeira)

Why I love it…
Praia da Falésia is without doubt my favourite beach in the entire Algarve, and the first one I recommend to anyone who asks me where to start.
What makes it unique is the immense cliff in incredible colours: blood red, vivid orange, golden ochre. It runs along several kilometres of fine sand. I still remember the first time I saw those colours from the miradouro (viewpoint) at the top of the cliffs — I felt as though I was standing in front of a painting.
The beach is long, which means you can always find a quiet spot even in high season. And the morning light on the cliffs… a truly spectacular sight.

2. Praia dos Três Irmãos (Alvor)

Why I love it…
The Three Brothers beach literally left me speechless. It is one of those beaches where you don’t know where to look first, with rock formations appearing in every direction.
Pinnacles, tunnels, hidden coves, and above all: the double arch of Prainha, accessible at low tide, one of the most photographed formations in all of Portugal. I spent a long time observing it from every angle, fascinated by the way the light plays through the two openings.
It is a beach you have to earn a little — you need to walk and scramble over some rocks to explore the coves, but not very much.

Location and Practical Tips
- Near Alvor, west of Portimão
- From Portimão: 15 min drive
- From Lagos: 20 min drive
- Paid parking at Praia de Alvor, then walk east
- Check tide times to access the double arch (low tide essential)

3. Praia da Marinha (Lagoa)

Why I love it…
Praia da Marinha is often voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and having visited it, I understand perfectly why.
It is a small beach set between cliffs of extraordinary geology, dotted with rocks of every shape, natural arches and caves. The water takes on emerald and sapphire hues depending on the light of the day. I was fascinated by the variety and density of the rock formations — you discover new ones at every step.
This is the ideal beach for exploring on foot at low tide, kayaking, or simply settling on the sand and admiring the scenery. A true gem.

4. Praia de Odeceixe

Why I love it…
Odeceixe beach is a genuine surprise on my list, as it is very different from all the others. If golden rock formations are my signature, here it was an entirely different kind of landscape that won me over.
Nestled on the border between the Algarve and the Alentejo, in the magnificent Costa Vicentina nature reserve, this wild beach is formed by the meeting of a river and the Atlantic. The result is a calm, shallow lagoon on the river side, perfect for children, and the open ocean on the dune side. It is a place that radiates true freedom, far from any hustle and bustle.
The village of Odeceixe perched on the hillside in the background adds even more charm to this authentic spot.

Location and Practical Tips
- In Odeceixe, within the Costa Vicentina nature park
- From Lagos: 1 hr drive
- Car park at the path entrance (free, but limited)
- Then 15 min walk
- Fine sandy beach, often windy (the Costa Vicentina is more exposed)
- River side calm, ocean side sometimes strong waves
- Lifeguarded beach in season
5. Praia dos Três Castelos (Portimão)

Why I love it…
Praia dos Três Castelos is the beach where I felt most strongly how tiny we are in the face of nature. These three enormous rocks rising straight out of the sand — natural sculptures several times taller than the swimmers — create a fascinating backdrop.
I loved walking at their base, feeling their mass, watching how the light plays on their faces depending on the time of day. At sunset, the rocks take on copper tones that are simply magical.
The beach itself is beautiful, with fine sand and calm waters partially sheltered by the rocks.

Location and Practical Tips
- In Portimão
- Paid parking nearby
- Fine sand
- Lifeguarded beach in season
- Seasonal beach bar on the clifftop
- Visit in the late afternoon for the golden light on the rocks
6. Praia do Camilo (Lagos)

Why I love it…
What I love about Praia do Camilo is that the discovery begins long before you reach the sand. The long wooden staircase that winds down through the golden cliff creates a perfect stage set: with every step, the panorama opens a little wider onto the rocks and the turquoise water below.
Once at the bottom, the beach is surrounded by cliffs and rock formations that give it a very intimate, sheltered feel. It is a small beach, but so beautiful that you have no desire to be anywhere else. I loved watching the caves carved into the rock all around.
An absolute must in the Lagos area.

Location and Practical Tips

- 10 min walk from Lagos town centre
- From Portimão: 25 min drive
- Street parking above (free but limited), arrive early

7. Praia dos Arrifes (Albufeira)

Why I love it…
Praia dos Arrifes is one of my favourite beaches in the Albufeira area. It offers a superb natural setting with rocks emerging from the sand and small natural coves.
I particularly love the atmosphere of this beach: both accessible and unspoilt. The rocks divide the space into several sections, giving a sense of intimacy and always making it possible to find a quiet corner. The water is very clear and the swimming is pleasant.
This is the beach I recommend to anyone who wants the rock formations typical of the Algarve.

Location and Practical Tips
- West of Albufeira
- From Albufeira centre: 5 min drive
- From Faro: 40 min drive
- Paid parking nearby
- Golden sand between the rocks

8. Praia Dona Ana (Lagos)

Why I love it…
Praia Dona Ana is one of the most photographed beaches in Lagos, and once you see it, you understand immediately why. Surrounded by tall cliffs in warm tones, this beautiful golden sandy bay is absolutely photogenic.
I fell completely in love with the colours: the contrast between the yellow and orange of the cliffs, the white sand and the deep blue of the Atlantic is stunning. The beach is well sheltered, which makes it pleasant even when there is a little wind.

Location and Practical Tips
- In Lagos, a few minutes from the centre
- From Lagos centre: 10 min walk or 5 min drive
- From Portimão: 25 min drive
- Paid parking above the beach

9. Praia de Albandeira (Lagoa)

Why I love it…
Praia de Albandeira is a tiny cove nestled between two cliffs, accessible via a discreet staircase, with a natural arch that spans the sand at one of its ends.
I loved the feeling of seclusion at this beach. The water is remarkably clear, the swimming is excellent, and the rocks all around offer exploration nooks not to be missed.
When the tide comes in, it is fascinating to watch the water swirling among the rocks.
I also love exploring the surrounding cliffs.

- From Carvoeiro: 15 min drive

10. Praia do Túnel (Albufeira)

Why I love it…
Praia do Túnel takes its name from its original access point: a tunnel carved through the cliff that leads directly onto the beach. It is that moment of crossing — the darkness, then the explosion of light and colour as you emerge onto the sand — that completely won me over.
It is a human-scale beach, well sheltered, with cliffs all around that give it the feel of a secret cove. I loved its slightly hidden character despite its proximity to Albufeira. It embodies both the charm of whitewashed villages clinging to the cliffs and the liveliness of a very accessible urban beach.

Location and Practical Tips
- In Albufeira, central Algarve coast
- From Albufeira centre: 10 min walk
- From Faro: 40 min drive
- Paid parking in Albufeira town centre
- Access via a pedestrian tunnel through the cliff (free, open year-round)
- Golden sand
- Lifeguarded beach in season
- Showers and restaurants nearby
11. Praia dos Careanos (Portimão)

Why I love it…
Praia dos Careanos is one of those beaches I discovered almost by chance while following the coastline, and from which I came away enchanted.
A neighbour of the large Praia da Rocha beaches, it is far quieter and more unspoilt, with golden rocks punctuating the sand and cliffs framing the bay. It is a beach with a beautiful soul, one that Portuguese families seem to particularly love.

Location and Practical Tips
- In Portimão, west of Praia da Rocha
- From Lagos: 20 min drive
- Paid parking nearby
- Golden sand and rocks
- Lifeguarded beach in season
- Beach bar
- Showers and toilets
- Restaurants nearby
12. Praia Nova (Between Portimão and Albufeira)

Why I love it…
Praia Nova rounds off my selection with a beautiful beach that offers exactly what I love: sand, rocks, clear water, and a rocky promontory with lovely views.
Before or after the beach, don’t miss walking around the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Rocha!

Location and Practical Tips
- In Porches
- From Portimão: 30 min drive
- From Lagos: 45 min drive
- From Albufeira: 25 min drive
- Paid parking nearby
- Fine sand and rocks
- Lifeguarded beach in season
For Lovers of Long Sandy Beaches…
My selection is clearly geared towards rock formations — that is my passion! But if you prefer long stretches of fine sand for walking, jogging or sunbathing, the Algarve has exactly what you need too. For that, head to the eastern part of the region.
Ilha Deserta (Faro)

Accessible only by boat from Faro (20 min crossing), Ilha Deserta is a barrier island within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, with several kilometres of entirely wild beach. No cars, no buildings, just sand, dunes, the sea on one side and the lagoon on the other. It is otherworldly, restful and truly beautiful.
Discover the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and its hundreds of migratory birds aboard a solar-powered boat – see activity details here.
The Beaches near Tavira

Around Tavira, you will also find long, completely flat sandy beaches, such as Manta Rota, ideal for long walks with your feet in the water.
Frequently Asked Questions
Best Time to Swim in the Algarve
June to October is the best period for swimming. The Atlantic water is colder than the Mediterranean (around 18–20°C in June, up to 23°C in August–September). The west coast (Costa Vicentina) is more exposed to wind and the water stays cooler there throughout the year.
How to Reach the Best Rocky Beaches?
Most rocky-formation beaches are accessible by car, but often require descending stairs cut into the cliff (5 to 15 min). Bring comfortable shoes for rock exploration. For coves like Marinha or Albandeira, I always arrive before 9 am in summer: the car parks are small and the beaches fill up very quickly.
