Where to stay for honeymoon or romantic vacations
The entire Algarve is full of romantic spots with cliffs, sea caves, arches and much more.
There is no one specific area that is more suited.
It depends what kind of vacation you enjoy as a couple, as per the criteria above.
Faro = where to stay for a larger city
If you prefer the vibe of a large city with lots of local, then Faro is your best choice, close to the airport

Olhao = where to stay on a budget
Olhao is a lot less touristic, but its streets in the old part of town also have a lot of charm.

Aljezur = where to stay for surfing
If you are looking to surf, you need to go to the West coast of the Algarve, not the South.
The south-western tip of mainland Europe faces to the Atlantic Ocean. Aljezur, is central for many of the beaches.

Road tripping in Portugal via the Algarve
If you are road tripping Portugal, and want to see all that the Algarve has to offer.
I recommend:
- at least one night to the East to see the long sandy beach, for example staying in Tavira.
- at least 2 or 3 nights to the West, the explore the cliffs, for example staying in Portimao

Area 1 – where to stay in Lagos (best for first-timers)
About Lagos
With a historical center, famous beaches and cliffs and a quieter vibe, Lagos is a great place to first discover the Algarve (and to come back if you love it!).
It has a much quieter atmosphere than the other large towns in the Algarve, but still has a large offer of accommodations.
And it is very close to Ponta da Piedade and Praia do Camilo.
No long sandy beach, but some very scenic ones, nestled in the cliffs and will golden sand.

About Portimao
Portimao and is beach Praia da Rocha is one of the most practical place to stay in the Algarve.
It is in the middle of all the best cliff areas, making driving everywhere shorter.
The town has all you need: shops, restaurant, nightlife, casino…
And its beach offers golden sand and cliffs.
Plus, if you enjoy long morning or evening walks, there is easy access to the scenic seafront promenade on top of the cliffs.
The accommodation offer is very wide

Lisbon to Portimao = 2h45 drive
Faro to Portimao = 55min drive

Praia da Rocha is right in town.

About Alvor
Alvor is a little gem in my opinion.
It is as centrally located as Portimao. But it is a better option for those looking for a quieter holiday, especially with a family.
The village still has a lot of charm and its Manueline-style churches are adored by photographers.
You will find more traditional restaurants and a vast beach with golden sand.
Plus, you can easily go for a walk in the nearby Ria de Alvor reserve.

Lisbon to Alvor = 2h40 drive
Faro to Alvor = 50min drive
- Beaches
Praia do Alvor is a long and wide beach, perfect to find a spot with your kids

The Ria de Alvor nature reserve, right next to the village.
Otherwise, it is very central and you can reach most Algarve highlights in under 1h drive.

Area 5 – where to stay in Carvoeiro (relaxing, value)
About Carvoeiro
Carvoieiro is not for those looking to easily walk a few hundred meters and relax on the beach. And it is definitively not for those looking for a vibrant nightlife.
But if you are looking for a large choice of accommodations, a central location, close to the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve (short drive) and a quiet vibe… then, it is a good choice for you.
Those staying in the heart of the village can still be only a few meters away from a beach.
This is a great place to stay with family.
Why stay in Carvoeiro – Analysis

Area 6 – where to stay in Tavira (best for charm)
About Tavira
Tavira is a little gem on the East side of the Algarve.
If you are looking with charm and more authentic experiences, this is the place to go.
Simply walking in town is a pleasure: Moorish heritage, white buildings, cobbled streets, roman bridge, medieval castle…
It is very picturesque!

- Beaches
The town is not right on the coast.
But it is close to Ilha de Tavira and its famous white sand pristine beaches.

Area 7 – where to stay in Manta Rota (best for flat beach)
About Manta Rota
OK. This destination is not often listed as one of the best places to stay in Algarve.
But I want to think about all kind of travelers.
And some of you might just be looking for a very laid-back location with only a short flat walk to spend hours on a sandy beach.Not everyone is looking for restaurants, charming old towns and lots of place to go.
So if you just want to relax and spend tome on the beach without much efforts, Manta Rota is for you.

Very very long sandy beach of Praia da Manta Rota

Ria Formosa and its birds are also only a short drive away.
And you are very close to the border with Spain!

Here you best choice of accommodations are the large luxury resorts.

About Monchique
Most of the best destinations to stay in the Algarve are close to the sea. The region is famous for its beaches.
But is also has a small mountain range, where you can enjoy hiking and cooler temperatures.
Monchique is considered the most charming villages in the area and it is famous for its market (second Friday of the month)

North of Portimao
Lisbon to Lagos = 2h45 drive
Faro to Lagos = 1h10 drive
- Beaches
You are in the mountains away from the beaches.
The closest will be in Portimao, 30min drive away.

Fewer options than in the large seaside town, but you can find restaurants.
- Nearby attractions and activities
Monchique is a great place for hiking.
Plus, some of the famous sights in the Algarve are not that far away: Benagil is 45min away, Ponta da Piedade is 45min away.

About Aljezur

It is another Mecca for surfers, and has been able to keep its local vibe so far.

All the surfing beaches will keep you busy, but you can also visit the cliffs of Sagres and the beaches of Lagos in under 45 minutes.

Great location to stay close to the airport and to visit both the West and the East side of the Algarve.
It is a large city not dedicated only to tourism.
The historic center and its charming streets are surrounded with old fortification walls. - Beaches
It is close to the Rio Formosa Natural Park (go birdwatching), so direct beach options are limited.
But you can head to Praia do Faro

Middle of the Algarve South coast, east of Faro

Olhao is not a touristic town. Here you can stay among locals and experience more of life in the Algarve.
It is home to a vibrant fishing community and the old town has a lot of charm with historical buildings. It is not “pretty” or polished like the other towns.
And because of that, you can find cheaper accommodations here. - Beaches
No beach in town.
You must take your car and head, for example, to Praia de Faro.
But it is also a great place to take boats to islands and the Rio Formosa reserve. - Accommodations
