Visiting Slovenia in summer? Want to get a bit of height to admire the mountains around Bohinj?
Here’s my guide to making the most of the Vogel cable car: access, parking, figures, things to see.
Is the Vogel gondola worth it?
That depends. The cable car offers magnificent views of Lake Bohinj and the surrounding mountains. The views are breathtaking and it gives you access to other walks at altitude.
However, if you don’t hike, the time spent admiring the views vs. the price may not seem like enough.
This is one of the must-see attractions around Lake Bohinj.

Vogel in figures
- Built in 2001
- The cable car ascends from Ukanc at 579 metres to the Voge ski resort at 1535 metres.
- A difference in altitude of 956 metres in around 4 minutes.
- Each trip can carry up to 80 passengers.
- Two-way cabin.
- The average gradient is 70%!
The climb
The views from the Vogel cable car are breathtaking. With an average gradient of 70%, the experience is impressive.
You can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Bohinj and the Julian Alps.
As you climb, the lake appears as a glistening pool below, framed by towering peaks.
On a clear day, the scenery is particularly impressive, with sweeping vistas that invite you to explore.
View from the platform
Once at the top, it’s not the best observation platform there is at the top of the gondola.
But you can take time to admire details of Lake Bohinj, as well as the peaks in front of you. Note Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, at an altitude of 2,864 metres.
