Best Areas to Stay in Paris - Quick Answer
After having both visited Paris as a traveler, and lived in Paris, my answer about the best areas to stay in Paris is as follows:
- The Marais for its atmosphere mix of history and trendiness (in the 4th arrondissement)
- The Quartier Latin but near the Pantheon for a French classic and vibrant life (in the 5th arrondissement)
- The 6th arrondissement for a quieter, easy going yet chic French Touch with nature and culture
- Ile Saint-Louis (1st), small island in the heart of Paris, yet away from the crowds with classic Parisian style
- The 11th near Oberkampf for trendy with good food and less expensive options
And the anti-where to stay in Paris
The fact is that you can find hotel gems everywhere. And the atmosphere can change from one street to another. And you are close to everything by metro.
- If you want to get away from the main crowds, avoid the 1st to 6th arrondissements
- If you want to avoid boring nights, head to the 3rd, 4th and 5th
- If you want to avoid noise, stay by a park such as Buttes Chaumont, Luxembourg Gardens, Vincennes...
Ok. This was my very short answer with my personal opinion for those who just want an straight answer that can suit most.
But if you want to find the best place to stay in Paris for you, the one that fits your traveler's personality, I have written this detailed guide that I hope will help you make a decision.

Understand Paris and its Attractions - Neighborhood maps
How Paris is structured?
To get oriented in Paris, here are a few facts:
- There is Paris Intramuros, what is really 'Paris' and the larger Paris Area which is 'la région parisienne' (the Parisian region) - The Intramuros is limited by a large circular road called the Périphérique.
- The most famous Paris attractions are in Paris intramuros, except the Versailles Castle and La Defense
- Paris intramuros is divided into 20 neighborhoods called "arrondissements". They are structured in an Clockwise outward spiral. So, the lower the number the closer to the center you are.
- Paris is also often cut in half by the Seine River - You are either on the left bank ("Rive-gauche") to the South and the right bank ("Rive-Droite") to the North. Historically the left bank used to be more bohemian but it can now change from one street to another
- Metro station are often used to get oriented - " something is close to xxx metro station"
Map of Paris Neightborhoods and Attractions
Let's get you even more oriented.
As a tourist, you probably want to find the best places to stay in Paris close to everything. So here is a map of the neighborhoods with the main attractions in Paris.
Of course I can't place all the things to see and do in Paris, there are so many (especially in the heart of Paris)!!! But I hope it helps you get better oriented.
Best areas to stay in Paris - Map with prices
In the next chapter, I will introduce all the arrondissements one by one for your to find the best neighborhood to stay in Paris. But first, here is a visual summary.
It is a global assessment of each - of course things can change from one side of an arrondissement to another (some of them are quite large) - this just to give you a general overview of each neighborhood with their attractions, Vibe and Price Range
Some people will complain about this map because the words are too limiting, and "their neighborhood is so much more". I agree, all of them have different sections and atmospheres. There will always be issues with a summary.
Cost Ratings are overall evaluations from $ to $$$$. They is average based on accommodations within price ranges offered on booking.com for 1 night in November in the middle of the week for 2 adults. You can of course find all types of accommodation and prices in each neighborhood.

Where to stay in Paris - General Tips
Tips on where to stay
Before we look into each neighborhood, here are some general tips to help you decide where to stay in Paris:
- BOOK EARLY to find good deals on the best hotels
- Paris is full of old buildings, so be aware that some of the cheaper hotel will look tired. This is a trade-off.
- Generally speaking, it is mode expensive in the center, and the further towards the outside ring you get, the cheaper the hotels
Yes, the first time you look at it, finding the best place to stay in Paris can feel daunting but
- Paris is really Easy to get around - a lot of attractions in the center can be visited on foot, other with the boats cruising the Seine River. Otherwise the metro (underground train) is reliable, safe and easy to use. But if you are scared of taking it, no worries, the Hop-on - Hop-off buses will take you around to all the major sights. So you see no need to worry.
- Taxis are readily available in all neighborhood and will go everywhere
- Since it is easy to get around, do not fixate on one attraction to find your Paris accommodation, unless you want a hotel with view of one special place (for example the Shangri-La has splendid views of the Eiffel Tower)
- Don't dismiss the neighborhoods just outside Paris. They are sometimes cheaper and some of them have metro station - See further in this article for good options
- Where to stay in Paris first time? - I think there is not much difference between your first time and repeat visit. It depends more on your profile
- Choose mostly based on your budget and the vibe you are looking for - see my guide by neighborhood to help you find the answer
Tips on where not to stay in paris
Before we discuss the best places to stay in Paris, here are a few tips about where not to stay in Paris:
- If you don't feel comfortable with public transports, avoid getting too far out of Paris. The RER suburban trains can be daunting at first - Only pick areas where you can find a metro
- At night, some streets feel more comfortable than other. Impression is that: around the metro station of Barbes Rochechouart, Bâton Rouge and Gare du Nord, the people walking at night feel less comfortable.
- Crime rate is not particularly high in Paris. But like in most large city, pickpockets are around so pay attention - I have lived in Paris center during 2 years and had no issues at all. Just be mindful!

Options of areas to stay just outside Paris
The best areas to stay in Paris are not always in Paris. You can have a look also just outside, in the outskirts, since some metro line are continuing past the frontier of the "Péripherique" (Circling road). It is not systematically cheaper, but you can find good options. You just need a bit more time to reach the attractions.
Below are some areas just outside of Paris where you could stay. If you pick those, make sure to choose a hotel close the the metro station (booking.com lets you see them on a map):

Other Options for Paris Accommodations - Hostels, Apartments
Best Hostels in Paris
Really tight budget? Don't mind sleeping in a dorm. Here are some hostel options for you which are the best rated on booking.com:
- Les Piaules in the 11th, 120m from the Metro station Couronnes - Line 2 - check photos and prices
- Generator Paris in the 10th, close to Metro station Colonel Fabirn (Line 2) - Check photos and prices

Best apartments to stay in Paris
If you are staying for a week or more, Renting an apartment is a great option. You feel like you live like Parisians and can cook instead of eating out every night.
From what I heard on the French television, many Airbnb in paris are actually not following the law, so I prefer to direct you towards the rental on booking.com. They have a lot of choices, and more flexible conditions.

We are a family of 6, finding it a challenge to find something for two nights that is safe, not to pricey and close to walk or hop on the sightseeing buses. Do you know if Ibis is a reputable chain of hotel/hostels?
Claire, the Travel Planning Geek says
Hi Al
Ibis is very well known with French people.
It has a good overall reputation.
With my parents we have used them many times when I was little. And we still do sometimes.
I wish you wonderful travels!

I am going to Paris for my 40th birthday in January of 2020. Where would you recommend I stay? I want to be in the heart of the city. Also, what is a good place to celebrate, ie drinks and dinner?
Thanks!
Claire, the Travel Planning Geek says
Hi Lesley
I am not sure what more you want me to say. I wrote a lot in the article. It depends on what you are looking for and what you want to do…
For drinks and dinner, I am not the right blogger to ask. I rarely talk about food and I don’t drink. Sorry
Enjoy the planning of your trip!
