One week in Jordan – Overview

Last updated on September 15, 2017 by Claire / this article contains affiliate links (Info)

Beginning of 2013, it was time for me to plan my next trip, on week not too far from Europe in May….

Do not miss my 5 favorite photos of my week in Jordan!

THE PLANNING

My search criteria’s were:

  • Less than 4 hour flight
  • Small group tour (I like sharing experiences but not with 40 people who will systematically be late…)
  • Some time in the desert
  • Not too sporty (I am a bit out of shape) but still a bit of walking (best way to see things)

My first wish was for Egypt and its white desert but my mum would have been too worried. Then I looked into Oman but could not find a tour that satisfied me. This is when I turned to Jordan and thought ‘OF COURSE, PETRA!’. Not the pyramids but an excellent alternative…

Discovering Petra
Discovering Petra

I found a tour run by Terhaal  and most of it was what I was looking for. I booked it and added a day in Amman for which they booked my hotel and a half day tour of the desert castles. They were very useful and answered to all my questions very quickly. For a full review of my tour with them check my post Detailed review of 8 Day Jordan Adventure with Terhaal

THE ITINERARY

  • Saturday: arrival in Amman, night in Amman
  • Sunday: Desert castle tour and free time in Amman, night in Amman
  • Monday: Jerash, drive to Dana reserve, night at the campsite of the Dana Reserve
  • Tuesday: Hike in Dana Reserve, drive to Petra, (I went to little Petra by Myself), night in Petra
  • Wednesday, Thusday: Petra (Check out my travel tips to organize your time there)
  • Friday: Wadi Rum and night in Bedouin camp
  • Saturday: Dead sea, night at Dead Sea

Do not miss my 5 favorite photos of my week in Jordan!

THE IMPRESSION

 The best

  • Feeling safe at all time
  • Listening to the prayer call at sunset with the policemen at the Citadel
  • Discovering the Jerash ruins with absolutely no one around
  • Sleeping at the quiet Dana reserve campsite
  • Admiring the magnificent Petra

 The not so good

  • Well, I was sick in the middle which was really not fun
  • The cleanliness of some toilets on the road
  • The rubbish in the dead sea (I will explain in my post about the dead sea. Wait for it!)

In the next posts I will describe my experiences in all those locations, my favorite moments and will provide some tips I gathered along the way. For all my posts about my trip to Jordan, go here
